“Planting seeds” at Camp Kinard

There is an old Greek proverb, “A society grows great when old men [people] plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” And that is what we are asking, for you to plant trees, or seeds, from which you may never know the fruit. This campaign for the South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers is one of utmost importance. Many will shrug off this campaign and say, “It’s just camp.”

But there is something much deeper happening here… this is about community in Christ. With this campaign we are endeavoring to alter the landscape of ministry at Camp Kinard in the South Carolina Synod for generations; think about it, for generations.

This $2,200,000 campaign by SCLRC will bring to us a new ADA compliant pool and bath house, already in progress, making access to community through water for many with mobility issues. Imagine the thrill of the many that will now be included instead of isolated. But also consider the impact that this will have on the family of these individuals as families get to hear stories of joy as opposed to feelings of segregation as they attend camp. Imagine a parent hearing from their child that they are excited about camp as opposed to brushing it off because they know they are likely to feel isolated.

The nature of the gospel is about welcoming those that feel excluded. Maybe it will be a child of yours, a grandchild, or even a great grandchild that is transformed by these places where they may experience God at work. Along with the new pool at Camp Kinard are the future plans of a glorious chapel and outside worship space. Both of which will take in the view from the bluff overlooking the lake. This chapel will afford us a flex space for many opportunities to gather and celebrate the days that God grants us. But also, it will open up possibilities to expose others to the love and grace of God through the programs that can be effected upon those that gather.

These two projects are the major emphasis among the others at SCLRC and it is impossible for us to achieve them without the support of all. There is room for all to participate and we encourage all of you to consider how it is that you can make a difference in the lives of future generations. Even $2.00 per day for three years will have a tremendous impact on people we will never know. If you desire to make a difference in the world, where here is an opportunity to touch the lives of people that in turn will touch others. In closing, I tell you that this is spiritual. This is about your relationship with God and a returning to God a portion of what God has given to you.
