Updated: February 13, 2024

This past weekend, nearly 100 individuals gathered at Camp Kinard for the official dedication of the Phoebe Singley Callahan Swimming Pool.

Part of the Building+Renewing+Believing: Holy Spaces Campaign, this new handicap accessible feature at Camp Kinard will ensure youth and adults can enjoy a break from the summer heat while on retreat.

“This is indeed a beautiful sight” shared Rev. Mary M. Finklea

SCLRC’s Community & Congregation Engagement Coordinator. “This [new pool] has been long awaited, long dreamed of, and it is here!”

SCLRC also celebrated six individuals were voted on and received the coveted distinction of being the first ones to swim in the new pool. Bill Newmyer with the SC Synod Lutheran Church Youth, Rev. Matthew Titus of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (Newberry, SC), Camp Kinard Director Nevin Rodgers, Rev. David Coffman with Newberry College Campus Ministry, Rev. Rebecca Wicker of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church (Newberry, SC), & Coastal Retreat Director Elliott Cox all jumped in the pool as the dedication came to a close.

In the days leading up to the event, 41 donors showed their support for SCLRC’s ministry and raised an incredible $7,475 towards the Holy Spaces campaign. We give thanks for all who attended the dedication, supported the “Make a Splash” campaign, and all those who have shown their ongoing support for the South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers!

Pool construction nearing completion at Camp Kinard

Updated: June 8, 2023

Earlier this month at the annual South Carolina Synod Assembly, SCLRC Executive Director Dallas Shealy eagerly brought greetings to those gathered from the ministry of Camp Kinard & Coastal Retreat.

“We are excited to announce that we have seen Jesus in the near completion of our beautiful pool and pool house at Camp Kinard!” shared Dallas. “We had hoped that we would be swimming by now, however construction always has a way of taking a few little turns. We are still a

couple weeks out but we are SO CLOSE!

The great news is that South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers has raised over $630,000 – which represents nearly 30% of the way to our campaign total of $2.2 million.

We lift-up the 25 South Carolina Synod Congregations who have already made gifts to the Building+Renewing+Believing: Holy Spaces Campaign – including our top two giving congregations of Living Springs Lutheran Church (Columbia, SC) and Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (Columbia, SC)

If you and your congregation have not yet signed up to pledge their support of providing holy spaces for God to change lives, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, Rev. Mary Finklea, or any of our wonderful board members!”
